Corn The Pros and Cons In Your Pet Food

Most Veterinarians will tell you that corn is not a good thing to have in your pet’s food.  They claim that it is not digestible.  There are a few myths about this.

Corn fillers are what is bad and has little if no nutritional value.  Processors of dog and cat foods put these fillers in to make them a profit.  Ingredients such as, corn gluten, corn gluten meal, corn bran and corn flour are what is left after all the nutritious parts have been used in corn.

All corn is not equal!

For the above reasons all corn has gotten a bad name and people think that any corn in their dog or cat’s food is bad.  This is simply not so.  91% of corn is digestible and can be eaten by your dogs and cats.  Right there tells you that all corn is not equal.  What you want to see in the ingredients of your dog and cat food are things like, ground corn or whole kernel corn or anything in between.

Most dogs and cats that have allergies are not allergic to corn with only about 1.5% of dogs truly being allergic to corn.

The pros of feeding corn to your dogs and cats are:

1.      Linoleic Acid is an important fatty acid and provides the body with energy. Source: Medical News
2.      As stated earlier it is almost totally digestible.
3.      For great skin and coat corn oil is the best.
4.      Amino Acids and Fiber are found in corn and are good for the diet.
5.      It is the most nutritionally balance of all grain.
It is important to know what is in your pet’s food and to know what is right for your pets.  Today there is so much misinformation going around it is best to research what is right and what is not right in your pet’s diet and food sources.

  1. I think ideas about what is good and bad to feed pets fluctuate. Now they say corn is bad, but who knows, maybe in ten years vets will be raging about what humans have known all along. I think natural food like corn is better for dogs than some of the gunk in the packaged dog food. Good post.

  2. They did that with Eggs. A few years ago they were horrible for you and now they are good for you. It's the type of corn that is in the foods that is bad, not actually the corn kernals themselves. That's what people get mixed up about. Ground corn is the whole corn, not the by product after the good stuff has been removed.
